This is, also, no doubt Lord Russ' darkest and angriest album.
A hearty dose of bacchanalia, Know Your Monkey was Lord Russ' first 'official' album, released back in 1995. Lord Russ recorded this on a little cassette 4-track in the basement of a family's home, who were nice enough to rent a room to a debaucherous and troubled young rocker.
Although, there are some very heavy distorted guitars on Know Your Monkey, they were all his acoustic guitar through a fuzz and a Wah-Wah pedal. Lord Russ was flat broke and all he owned was an acoustic guitar with two pedals, a 4 track, one microphone, his father's 1970s red suit jacket with a few of his old shirts too, and usually a bottle of Whiskey or cheap champagne or wine.
Inspired by Liz Phair's "Whipsmart" album, Lord Russ did not hold back with the language and tongue-lashings on this one. It's a rough, mean, and dirty album. Like a Mr. Hyde to Bryan Ferry's Dr. Jeckyl.
